What happens when we experience an overflow of God in our life? We are met with overflowing joy, peace, and gratitude. Good fruits and good words come when we have an overflow of God in our hearts.
An overflow occurs when we have filled ourselves to capacity and there is so much that it begins to overflow out of us.
The book of Luke says this, “For the overflow of what has been stored in your heart will be seen by your fruit and will be heard in your words”. Luke 6:45 TPT
What we store in our hearts is directly correlated with our quality of life. We must be mindful of what we do and don’t store in our hearts.
Today I am sharing with you 5 ways to have a heart overflowing to the brim with the goodness of God.

1. Read the Word of God
This is first and foremost. We discover more of God through His Word. The Word of God can speak to our hearts in powerful ways, and the more we put into our hearts, the more overflow we will produce. We are made holy by the Truth.
John 17:17 in the Passion Translation says, “Your Word is truth! So make them holy by the truth”. The NIV translation says, “Sanctify them by the truth; your Word is truth”.

2. Memorize the Word of God
Memorizing scripture isn’t just for the children in children’s church. Ann Voskamp says, “Time memorizing Scriptures is perhaps more important than quiet time — because when we fill our hearts with His Word, we can fill all our hours with His Word — and “quiet time” can then become all of our time.”
I’ll be honest and say that for the longest time when I heard people talking about memorizing scripture I would kind of cringe because it sounded legalistic, but here’s the deal, the Word of God tells us over and over to meditate on its words, and how can we do that if it is not stored in our hearts?
In order to meditate on something, we must first know it. We don’t have to approach this legalistically; we can find delight in memorizing the precious Word of God. We can see the immense value in it and enjoy doing it, rather than approaching it as a stringent rule.

3. Think on Good Things
Our thoughts are powerful. Filling our minds with pure, holy, noble thoughts allows us to experience more of God’s peace and presence throughout the day. Philippians 4:8 tells us to think on whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
When we stew on negative thoughts, we keep ourselves from experiencing the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. Begin to experience an overflow of God in your life by purposely thinking about God’s goodness throughout the day.

4. Guard Your Heart from Evil
In order to create an overflow of God in our hearts, we must be sure that we are guarding our hearts from evil. Satan is described as a roaring lion who prowls around looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8) He wants to fill our minds and hearts with evil, and we must be on guard against him.
Blessed are the pure in heart. (Matthew 5:8) If our hearts and minds are full of the things of this world, we don’t leave room for the things of God. Eliminating evil from our lives and hearts allows us to overflow with the goodness of God.
Luke 8:11-15 TPT 11 “Here, then, is the deeper meaning to my parable: The word of God is the seed that is sown into hearts. 12 The hard pathway represents the hard hearts of men who hear the word of God but the slanderer quickly snatches away what was sown in their hearts to keep them from believing and experiencing salvation. 13 The seed falling on the gravel represents those who initially respond to the word with joy, but soon afterward, when a season of harassment of the enemy and difficulty come to them, they wither and fall away, for they have no root in the truth and their faith is temporary. 14 The seed that falls into the weeds represents the hearts of those who hear the word of God but their growth is quickly choked off by their own anxious cares, the riches of this world, and the fleeting pleasures of this life. This is why they never become mature and fruitful. 15 The seed that fell into good, fertile soil represents those lovers of truth who hear it deep within their hearts. They respond by clinging to the word, keeping it dear as they endure all things in faith. This is the seed that will one day bear much fruit in their lives.”
5. Maintain an Open Heart
While we must be intentional about guarding our hearts from the enemy, we also must be mindful of keeping our hearts open to the Lord.
Luke 8:18 in the passion translation says, “So pay careful attention to your hearts as you hear my teaching, for to those who have open hearts, even more revelation will be given to them until it overflows. And for those who do not listen with open hearts, what little light they imagine to have will be taken away.”
We’ve all been given the capacity to hear and receive the Word of God, but we must keep our hearts open to it! The enemy is on a mission to harden our hearts from hearing and comprehending the Word of God. Let’s ensure our hearts stay open.

We can all experience an overflow of God in our lives. Reading the Word, memorizing scripture, maintaining a healthy thought life, guarding our hearts from evil, and maintaining an open heart toward God are all ways to begin experiencing an overflow of God in your life.
God promises us that when we seek Him with all of our heart we will find Him. If you desire more of God, begin to seek Him through reading His living Word, praying often, and asking the Holy Spirit to fill you with more of Him.
