God had been planting the idea of motherhood being a ministry deep in my heart all week. That Friday night when my husband headed out the door to volunteer at a church event, I was completely content with my position at home with our two girls.
One was still growing inside of me and the other was just a few months away from turning 3. I had no problem accepting that motherhood in and of itself was a ministry because it has refined me, shaped me, and transformed me like nothing else in my life ever has.
It’s brought me to the feet of Jesus more than anything else. It’s stretched my faith, it’s exposed my weaknesses, it’s brought out my strengths, and it’s been the ultimate demonstration of God’s love. There’s no doubt in my mind that motherhood truly is a ministry.
I thought about the mom doubting if she’s doing enough in her church and her community and I wanted to ensure her that she’s doing plenty. I wanted to tell her God sees the daily sacrifices she makes in her ministry of motherhood.
I could picture her perfectly because I’ve been her. I view this blog as a ministry, and I’ve been frustrated at times when I could not do more because my ministry as mom was so all-consuming.
The Most Important Work
Thankfully I came across this quote by the great C.S. Lewis that completely revolutionized my role as mama.
“Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.” C.S. Lewis
Your child isn’t keeping you from doing great things, raising your child well is a great thing.
You don’t have to wish away their needy years so you can get on with your important work, you can focus on just how important the work of raising your child well is.
The ministry of motherhood is the most important ministry you’ll ever take part in. This isn’t meant to scare you, but to empower and inspire you to go after it with all of your heart.
Don’t wish it away, don’t despise it. Embrace it! All its ups and downs. All its ins and outs, because it is, in fact, the most important work you’ll ever do.
A Call to Every Mom
This ministry isn’t meant for just stay at home moms or just working moms. It isn’t reserved for perfect moms, for we all fall short. It’s meant for every mom.
It’s a call to love our children well. To choose them over less important things. To see their value and worth through the eyes of Jesus and to make sure they know they are heard, loved, and cared for deeply by the King of Kings.
It’s a ministry we all must embrace, prioritize, and commit to because our kids are worth it and taking time to raise them well is worth any effort it may take.
Does this mean we ignore the other passions and ministries brewing on the inside of us? No, it simply means we prioritize our lives in a way that keeps first things first.
This will look different for every individual and every family. The key here is to seek God on what it is meant to look like for your family.
It’s not easy. We won’t always do it perfectly, but we can stay diligent to lean into our Father’s voice to walk this out according to His will.
Rooting for you mama!
Lauren

Happy to have found your blog! I can’t even describe how much I relate to the feeling that I’m not doing enough as “just a mom”. Even among other Christian moms, I see some handling the stress of volunteering outside the home WITH their kids, or going on missions with their kids and here I am at home, sometimes in tears because we can’t get through the day without 62 arguments or meltdowns. Remembering that God knows our limitations and that we are ‘enough’ in and through Him really transforms our hearts. Thanks for your words ❤️
You are so right that God knows our limitations! We are all different and have different strengths, this is so important to remember. Thanks for your thoughtful comment. 🙂
Such a beautiful message – Motherhood is certainly a ministry.
Thank you! It certainly is. 🙂
